I don't have it either, but I have ordered it.

The US wil get it on DVD before the UK, it's only just come out here so I'll have to wait longer for the DVD.

I know that my friend has it. And she says that it is amazing! Obviously. Would it be anything but that?

Is there a projected release date yet?

You can also download the soundtrack from various places I'm sure. I have three of them as I couldn't wait for the CD to arrive.

I'm guessing it will be July/August sometime like that. The time between films being released in the cinema and then brought out on DVD, is getting smaller all the time, to try and stop piracy.

Yay, as I said great movie. The perfect cast reunited with the perfect director to take the musical to the screen!
Johnny Depp + Helena Bonham Carter + Alan Rickman = Pure love.
I agree with everything in JF's post. The Johanna + Anthony sub-plot was not needed and it wasn't fair to such young actors to act in a movie with those other superstars!! It takes a lot to give a musical character its own life and make him/her interesting to an audience and they didn't have it, despite all their prettiness!

I loved Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in their scenes together. She looked like the evil (or good!) sister of Bellatrix Lestrange! Alan Rickman was perfect, I prefer him evil and mean, muahahaha. I liked how he was such a one-dimensional character; being mean was just the way he was, deal with it! And I admit I was on the edge of my seat when Sweeney waves the knife over his throat the first time, even though I knew he couldn't kill him after only 20 mins!!

Special note to Gimli: I didn't mind the blood at all, it was obviously not real and well done that it was only fun!

Only scene I didn't like was how Mrs. Lovett died... I hate to see people burning!! Eww... I think I might have had the urge to study some imaginary dust on my knee for a few seconds during that scene!!

I liked the ending too... beautifully done in its own morbid way... and very peaceful.. all the demons were exterminated at last.

:D

I think the problem was with the Anthony/Johanna bit was you were too much into the whole Sweeney story, and the fact that Johnny and Helena were sooo good at singing, you wanted to get back to them to see what happens next!

Also, I think the role of Anthony was much too young. I was confused when he was singing the opening song about going to Peru and everything, as I thought he was dreaming. It was only later when he said he was a sailor that I realised. He didn't look like a sailor to me at all, too weak I think. Listening to the Broadway soundtrack of ST, Anthony was a more worldy-wise man, who even for all the wonders he had seen, the beauty of Johanna captured him. And I think an older actor would have made things make a bit more sense not some young puppy. :P

It's weird because in the film I couldn't like Judge Turpin, I really couldn't. But listening to the Broadway soundtrack, they missed out a critical song for him where he is tormented by his lust for Johanna and he says how he loved her in innocence as a daughter and then suddenly she was a woman... I mean, he obviously didn't treat her mother very well *cough* but I do feel a bit sorry for him really.

Oh, I'm glad it didn't bother you. I was a bit disappointed when he just hit Davy over the head with the kettle to be honest and then we he actually did slit his throat... I was quite surprised, it never occured to me someone would bleed that much. And the scene where he was killing one after the other, and singing, it was so over the top, I was in heaps of laughter.

D'ya know I didn't like that either. I wanted to look away, and I didn't manage in time. I didn't like it a) because I like Mrs. Lovett and b) because we could actually see her and she was screaming. I think I'd rather we saw the action from the side, not the outcome.

And the more I listen to the songs Mrs. L participates in, the more I feel sorry for her. The song "My Friends" when ST is talking about his razors dripping with rubies instead of silver, she says "silvers good enough for me". And the song "By the Sea" what she wants is nothing much to ask for. She doesn't want riches or jewels, she just wants to "grow old together" with Mr. T. And I think in a way she is just as much of a tragic character as ST.

The ending was beautiful. I'm glad it wasn't the usual fairy tale ending, with Anthony and Johanna leaving or something like that. The ending really left an impact.

Anthony and Johanna were obviously schooled singers where the others were cast because of their personality and acting skills (and swoon-worthiness!), they were simply too boring. I really liked the opening on the ship and I was so busy taken it all in so I didn't pay much attention to the words. I agree wth you that having an older actor playing Anthony might have added to his character and made the scenes more interesting. On the other hand, he can't be too old because Johanna is so young.

I'm feeling very ackward about the whole Judge Turpin thing. I know I'm supposed to dispise his character but I can't look beyond the fact that he is Alan Rickman! I think it is because of the whole musical set up and how one-dimensional the characters are. I just enjoy every scene of it and in particular AR's scenes. he reminds me of Snape, he's lending some of his Snapeish moves to Judge Turpin.

The last scene where everyone dies is very well choreographed and beautiful, and I try not to think of the symbolism in having Mrs. Lovett dying in the flames, like the witches burned on the stake in the old days. Without having seen the original play I suppose the writer meant to have her being one of the baddies... even though she only did it for love.
And true she too, lives a tragic life. She loves ST but she knows he can never return her love, so she would be content with just being with him. It is very humble. I really love Depp's expression during By The Sea, his grumpy-ness and reluctance, and even that would poor Mrs. Lovett put up with every day, just to be with him!

Well, I have FINALLY seen this great masterpiece that I have been looking forward to since I heard about it SOOOO long ago. It FINALLY came to my hometown, and I was able to see it yesterday afternoon.

I had a ridiculous grin across my face the ENTIRE time, and I sang along the whole time too. XD  XD

I loved EVERY second of it! Completely infatuated with it. Perfection in my mind. :P

Johnny, Helena and Alan were amazing. Their musical performances were stunning. I knew that they were going to be at least okay, because I had heard them before I'd seen the movie. However, I was shocked at just how good they were, for non-professional singers. That is quite the feat to be able to pull off. So BRAVO! to them! *cheers and throws confetti*
Johnny as Sweeney was just unbelievable. I swear, he was Sweeney. :notworthy: I dunno, I was basically in awe of him. More than usual. ;) Because he was portraying my absolute favourite musical character.
And ALAN! Oh my god! I was so creeped out by him it was unbelievable. :P It was amazing! Ha ha ha ha! I really loved his scenes with Johnny. The "Pretty Women" duet was really beautiful. Hysterical, but really well done I thought. Alan and Johnny just kind of meshed.

And I adored Helena as Mrs. Lovett. She was brilliant, I have to say. :P I am a fan of Angela Lansbury, in the original Broadway musical, but Helena was delightfully delicious as Lovett! :)

And the little boy! Toby! Wow, his voice was phenomenal! He was a treat to watch. I was a bit sad that they didn't have his hair turn white, like its supposed to. That's one of my most memorable memories from the stage production I saw. (He's supposed to have been so horrified by what he finds out and sees that his hair turns white) Toby (on the stage production) had me absolutely TERRIFIED at the end. Mainly because of the hair. XD But I still enjoyed this Toby. *nod nod*

Sacha Baron Cohen was wonderful as well. ABSOLUTELY hysterical. Oh my goodness, he was funny. :P

As for Johanna and Anthony. Well, I could obviously tell that they were professionals. :P I actually really enjoy their plotline. Its rather romantic. However, it seemed to be cut rather short in the film, which was sad. Which might be why so many of you thought their presence was a bit odd. :P But I loved their performances. :)

And Mrs. Lovett's death at the end! Ah ha ha ha ha ha! I was laughing so hard! :P Brilliant.

And the ending. Oh my goodness. It was SOOO tragic. It was just beautiful. I couldn't believe how artistic it was. Just that last shot of Sweeney and Lucy. Stunning. I was kind of awe-inspired by it. Just took my breath away.
I actually wasn't as terrified AND heartbroken as I was when I saw it on stage; this version was more heartbreaking.

The production of the film was AWESOME. The colours were great! Really reminded me of the stage production. Grim and bleak. Black, white, gray and red. WONDEFUL! :)

OH! And did anyone catch a wee glimpse of a certain Tony Head making a cameo?! XD I nearly died. :P

Anyway, once again Tim Burton + Johnny Depp = PERFECTION.

HUZZAH!!

EDIT: In my haste to make a post (:P) I forgot to say that I was rather disappointed in the disappearance of "The Ballad Of Sweeney Todd." I can understand why it was removed, but I've always loved that song. :P

@ Ea - Yeah, I have to agree they were boring, although they do have a couple of lively songs in the Broadway version, which I can understand why they left them out of the film, but perhaps had they added them, they may have been better characters. I think you could have had a 25 year old playing Anthony, no problem. It just would have made more sense to me, he could still have been beaten up by the Beadle, but it would have added more weight to his determination to free Johanna.

 Lol, I can't quite agree with you about the Snape thing, and at the moment I'm too much involved with Sweeney Todd's history to feel anything for the Judge. That will probably change when I see it again, but the moment I'm reacting to how people probably should react to his character. :P

Hey, I never thought of that! She was called a witch so it probably was a fitting death... even if it wasn't too nice to see.

I think everyone will see Mrs. Lovett in a different way. I don't think anyone can see her as the true villain, because that's the Judge, but I suppose she could be seen as a semi-villain, although I think she is just blinded by love, and in doing what she thought was right for herself and Sweeney, she has probably commited the second worst act against him.

@ Monty - HUZZAH!!! Lord love a duck! Ya saw it!!

They were uber-brill I have to agree with you. I can't *sing* their praises enough. :notworthy:

I think it is Johnny's best performance, ever. Even more so than Jack Sparrow. It's just so different from anything else, he's sinister, sad and evn sometimes happy. He manages to convey what he's feeling and he sings the songs with such emotion. I have the soundtrack now and when he's singing the song "Johanna" (in the film he's killing man after man and I thought it was hilarious) it makes me sad, because he sings it so sweetly and you can tell what he feels because of the way he sings it. I know I'll cry when I see this next time.

Haha, well I saw a clip of Angela Lansbury as Mrs. L on YouTube and I have to say she freaked me out. I think I'll stick to Helena. :teehee: She has a very nice voice, it's sweet and not as harsh as you would expect Mrs. L to have, which I think adds to her character.

Yeah, the kid was alright actually. He could have been a lot worse. Yeah, I read about that, though doesn't that usually happen to an older child? Perhaps they didn't want to add that in, if the character was much younger than normally portrayed.

I don't have a problem with the love story, just the actors. I didn't like the voice of Johanna, and although Anthony had a good voice, he didn't convince me that he was a sailor or that he was capable of stealing Johanna at gunpoint, whisking her off and making a go of it. I think an older actor (or at least an older looking actor) would have made more sense, rather than someone who looks like he couldn't look after a cactus let alone a young woman.

:hide: No, I didn't like her death at all. I didn't think seeing someone burn to death would bother me, but it did. Mainly because I liked Mrs. L, and personally I didn't see the need to actually see her burning alive and hearing her scream. It would have worked just has well if we just saw the action and not the outcome. I was feeling too sorry for her and ST to laugh at that point, because I knew all the humour was disappearing.

The ending was amazing. That was one of the most perfect endings to a film I have ever seen. I didn't want to know who found them, or to see Johanna and Anthony safely away, the whle story has been about ST and Lucy really, and to have that ending with them finally together... it was beautiful.... if there was an Oscar for "best film ending" that should surely win.

I'm not too familar with Anthony Head, but I seem to remember who he was in the film. Apparently, him and Christopher Lee and a few others, as ghosts were meant to sing the "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" but they cut it out as TB thought it didn't fit in with the film, which I can understand. I think they could have had the song playing over the end credits though. Perhaps there will be a deleted scene of it.

Ha ha. The songs get so stuck in my head.

I personally have no problem with the age of Anthony. He's just a sailor, not a captain or anything.

I'm considering seeing it again... actually it seems they show it in Spanish here and I feel strangely attracted to watching the movie in Spanish, but I don't think I can sit in for the whole movie without hearing the original angelic voices!

Nice long post Gimli, I actually did read it before but I was too caught up with other things to reply...
I can only agree with what you said on the Johanna and Anthony part. I didn't like her voice either..

Angela who, you said... the theater play version is out there on YouTube? I'd love to see that. And also some of the songs they didn't include... I thought this was the entire musical version but now I think about it, it makes sense if there were more sub-plots and songs for the stage version.

I thought Johanna's voice was excellent. Very impressive and hard to hit those high high notes. Anthony, too, has a fantastic singing voice.

I can't wait to see this movie. :P My sister and I were going to see it together, but she was studying abroad in France when it came out and by the time she came back it had left. We're waiting for it to come to the discount theater, now. I just love listening to the soundtrack, though. Johnny especially has so much emotion in his voice, and he and Helena make a great pair.

Well, it's Angela Lansbury. :P And here's a link to her on YouTube singing "A Little Priest" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYGHHxJnDIw

Mwa ha ha ha ha! My favourite part. XD I'm so morbid. ;)

I LOOOOOOOOOVE the soundtrack! Both the original and the film. I agree with Taur that Johnny has such a great voice. So much emotion, which is such a treat when it comes to musicals. :P

But when it comes to this show, the ONE song that seems to ALWAYS get stuck in my head is "Johanna." :P I always find myself waltzing around the house singing, "JOOOOOOOOOHHHAAAAAANNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!"
:P Yeah, I'm weird. But then I start singing "A Little Priest" as well. Which, garners a few weird looks. :P

Johanna gets stuck in my head too. I go around singing the priest and meatpie songs the most. ;)

"A Little Priest" is one of my favorites, too. :P It's terrible, but really funny to me!

Also on YouTube is a concert the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra gave in 2001, with Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett, who I think does a great job. :teehee:
