So, long funny story. We had originally gone to see Over Her Dead Body, but it was broken, and dumb and wouldn't work. So the persons said that we could either get two free movie passes and leave, or get one free one and got see either The Bucket List or Penelope. So the four of us were like, lets go see The Bucket List, but it was full. So they shuffled half of the audience into Penelope. And the four of us weren't allowed to sit on the ground(fire hazard...), so they had to bring in the most uncomfortable two person bench for us. So the four of us had to squeeze ourselves onto it, and all of our legs fell asleep. But it was a good movie.

Thanks to my computer being out of action, I was able to catch up this week on some films I have taped since Christmas (yes Christmas) and induldge in some films from my own collection.
The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire - Well I've seen a lot of the big epics - Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Cleopatra etc - and I'm convinved people forget this film. Personally, it is my favourite and way better than the over-hyped Ben-Hur. Admittedly it has Sophia Loren in it (who I can never understand), but as well as being a spectacle (which is basically all epics are) it actually does have a good story and a much better cast than normal. Alec Guinness as Marcus Aurelius.  He was so believable as being Caesar I would elect him. Christopher Plummer was soo evil as Commodus (and yes, Gladiator was a sort of rip-off of this film) that I would have elected him because he was fun.  And the locations were beautiful as well, it made a change to see forests and snow in the same film as sand and cities.
Funny Girl - Barbra Streisand is so zany and hyper, she makes me tried looking at her. I have no idea how she does it, and she was like this in Hello Dolly! as well. I only wish I'd had suntitles, as it was a bit hard to understand what she was saying/singing all the time as she was so fast. I can easily see why she shared her Acdemy Award as Best Actress with Katharine Hepburn, it was such an energetic performance and she played such a likable character. Some of the musical numbers were a bit.... iffy.... but that's nearly always how it is with musicals. I can't wait to see the sequel now.
The Dambusters - One of my favourite war films. *squee Richard Todd squee*. And certainly with one of the best theme tunes and some very nifty aerial shots and some really good images of Lancasters flying (which my Dambusters book made me depressed when it said all the planes used were eventually scrapped). There are a couple of bluff performance moments, a little bit hammy but I can easily overlook those for the rest of the time everyone is so believable. The story is fantastic as well, and pretty accurate - Ok, so we know the bouncing bomb breaking the dams didn't actually destroy as many industrial factories as they hoped, and more civilians were killed, but hey it was war and at least that was an accident unlike some things that happened to us. You can't knock the man or the creation as the idea was remarkable.
Paths of Glory - A lot better than I remember it being, but depressing as hell. I'm not a huge Kubrick fan (he made 2001 which I was forced to see 16 minutes off, and that was enough), so I really couldn't say if this is up to usual standard. It was quite a "heavy" film (I hate to sound like a poncing critic, but that actually is the only word I can use) but I think it lacked something, although I'm not sure what. The battle scene was brilliant - apart from the fact when people are being shelled they don't just fall down in one piece - I can't see how even with modern technology the scene could have looked any better or more realistic. Even for all that's good about CGI, I still think people like to blow holes in the ground themselves and create mud and all the rest of it, by hand. It is with a heavy heart that I once again have to eat my words and say Kirk Douglas was good as usual (after I spent years crucifying the guy after I saw him in Spartacus). I can see this as one of those films that critics can get "right into", but the only message I saw was the anti-war message, although, no doubt smarter (or more deluded) people than me, find more than that.
The Colditz Story - This is really right up there with my favourite war films. The story is pretty simple, but I love all the real "characters" there are, and the fact there are 4 different nations with prisoners of war as it makes it a bit different and a bit more realistic. I like the fact that it's tense and exciting but there is a lot of humour as well, which even under the circumstarnces, you would expect to be.
Breakfast at Tiffany's - I think after watching it 3 times, this film has finally "clicked" with me. I've always liked it, but I've also regraded it as one of those films that is viewed as if it comes from a higher plain than other films, just because. I think I can sort of see why people like it as much as they do. Sometimes I have to be in the right mood to really enjoy a certain type of film, and I was obviously in the right mood for this, as I enjoyed more than I have ever done before. Audrey Hepburn can do no wrong. I can't imagine Marilyn Monroe playing the part as she'd be the same as she always is, dopey and breathy. Audrey can truly act, and go from dizzy to solemn in the blink of an eye. And I can't believe I was crying when she found Cat at the end.  That's a new one for me.

Saw Pan's Labyrinth twice. (My third time total). It's such a fabulous film. Guillermo del Toro is brilliant.

The Passion of the Christ - My family always watches it around Easter... It's an amazingly powerful movie, but... yuck!  Rather gory... Still, I love it.

^zomg, I LOVE Benny and Joon! Sam is the epitome of cuteness. 
And I watched <i>Enchanted</i> last night. What a lovely movie, I adored it. It's been way too long since they've made a happy, fairy-taleish musical like that... And Prince Edward was amazing... probably my favorite person in the whole movie...
The scene where she has all the animals clean his house. *dies quietly* That was hysterical.
All and all, Disney - way to go! Good work on producing a new idea without mooching off of notorious authors! _________________ <center>
