^ I'm glad you got to see it PD. Personally, I thought the ending was one of the most awesome endings I have ever seen - a happy, fluffy ending would have completely ruined the feel of the film. I am so glad we didn't see Antony and Johanna sail away happy ever after - and that it ended with Sweeney and his true love, which is basically, what it was all about.

I would have loved Sweeney to have got away with it as well, but I actually am happier that he died as it made the film so much more better.

I'm glad I got to see it too.... ;) at least now I know what everyone's talking about. lol well, I didn't say the ending should've been happier or fluffier, I guess I mostly just forgot for a while that it WAS Tim Burton. ;) The ending did fit the film though, you are right, it wouldn't have felt quite right if things were all fluff (although it would've been interesting to see Sweeney get away with it, find his wife and daughter and finally settle down). So I know what you mean, JF. I also thought the end was sad, yet interesting. How Todd got what he wanted (to kill the judge) but he had to pay a great price for it (he killed his wife and he also died). It was extremely... bittersweet. And Mrs. Lovett left me somewhat wondering. It was like she was just using him or something... she was seducing him. So to me everyone thought he was the demon, but she really seemed to be the one lying and using. but that's just what I got from the film. ;) and I'm glad I got to let that out... lol I had all these ponderings bottled up inside for a whole day. :teehee:

^ I know what you mean about Mrs. Lovett, but she's a victim of the tragedy as well. She loved Sweeney, and although I think she kept the truth about his wife from him for her own benefit, I also think she did do it for him as well to spare him some of the pain. Mrs. L doesn't really want much in life. In the song "My Friends" when Sweeney says his blade will drip rubies she answers silvers good enough for me. And I think the song "By the Sea" is actually pretty sad, as all she wants is to spend her days in a little house by the sea, with Sweeney. Most other female characters would want riches and servants and jewels, but she just wants him and a life with him. And I find that really sad, as Sweeney didn't care for her and I don't think it ever occured to her he wouldn't. The whole film was really a tragedy really, almost a Shakespearean tragedy. The only hope was the life Antony and Johanna might have, and even then you are left to wonder whether it would work out for them. "So we just run away and all our dreams will come true?.... I hope so Johanna.... I've never had dreams, only nightmares".

^hmmm, I suppose when you put it like that, JF... it does make sense too. (and you are the Sweeney Todd fanatic, right? ;)) But still, what Mrs. Lovett did to him was sad, I think... if she had only told him his wife was still alive he probably would've looked all over for her and found her (therefore evading killing her ;)) although then she wouldn't have gotten him, but still. And I suppose you have a good point about her only wanting him and a little house and just a normal life... that adds a lot to my perspective of her character. I guess I knew she had more to her then what appears on the outside, but still... this is almost too much to try to piece together. (although she WAS the one who came up with the idea of the "meat pies") Who in the world is the real bad guy then? lol or is it just a mix of them all... or is it like PotC where the "bad guy" line is blurred? But I can still see where Sweeney would've wanted to throw her into the furnace... I mean, she told him she could be twice the wife (or woman, I forget ) his other wife was and all that... I mean, that would hurt and he probably felt betrayed and just... horrible. :erm: I'm just happy he didn't kill Joanna... by that point I was like "DON'T do it!!" :P But you're right, it does have that certain Shakespearian tragic air about it. (along with a sprinkling of humor (well, it did have some! :P)

Meh, I think I'm the only one in the family who even remotely liked it anyway.... :erm:

Without a doubt, what Mrs. L did to him was wrong, but I can't look at her and see her as a villainess like some people do, you know? She's a much more complicated character than she appears to be. Look at Toby for example. You could tell she loved that boy, and yet when it came between him and her Mr. Todd, she was prepared to give him up for Sweeney. It just shows how much she loved him, and what she was willing to do and in the end it was he that killed her, in a particularly horrible way (which I thought was too graphic personally, and the fact you could see her and here her... :-(). I have to feel sorry for her, just like I feel sorry for Sweeney (you know you shouldn't but you have to). The real villain of this was Judge Turpin and because of him Sweeney's life fell apart, and his wife's life was ruined, and his daughter suffered as well.

Sweeney Todd was very funny at times, I was laughing myself silly at some parts, but when it got nearer to the end, the tone of the film started to shift, and you kinda knew that it wasn't going to be funny anymore. I think it was the skill of Tim Burton that blended both the tragedy and the comedy together.

[BTW, if you want to talk about this more, we could move to the ST thread :-)]

I own Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium; love that movie, it's so sweet and simple, yet with a heartwarming message....good heavens, I just sounded like a grandmother.

I honestly have to say, I HATED August Rush. I hated the plotline, and I hated the bits with those homeless kids and Robin WIlliams. the music was okay; okay, I really like the music but the movie: :explode:

@ JF - Harsh? She kind of had this strange quirk of putting people into meat pies. :P

"Crash" I absolutely LOVE this movie. It's so brilliant. Plus, I sort of love Don Cheadle. :)
