Seriously, somehow you can be 1/4 of the way through the book and not have left the village you started in, and yet it's still FASCINATING. The depth that Jordan has is astounding, and all the thought he puts into his world and his characters. I'm not worthy.

I appreciate Eddings so much because I'be been reading them for a while, and on top of the humor, the books have sentimental value to me too ^_^

I actually really like Eddings too. I've read all of the Belgariad, but that was a while back, and quite a few of his other books as well. I think that in terms of the sheer magnitude and depth of the world, though, Jordan does pwn.

Meh. Once in a while I like to read junk that I dont want to analyze, and Eddings has the beauty that I just want to enjoy it and have fun. But then again that was pre-IB

Give me Tolkien over Eddings or Jordan eight days out of seven.

*agrees with timmeh* The Narnia books just don't do me any justice. I've read the series twice so far, and it's just so... dull. Regardless of any religious symbols/attempt to Christianize others, it's just un-interesting. But the religion thing is a turn off, I try to stay away from books that purposely have religion layed into the fabric of the story. I think that unless you are writing non-fiction, attempts to convert others, or show that one religion is better than the other should be left out.

Maybe I'm more of a character driven person, but there's no development in any of the characters. I think the only book that I enjoyed remotely was The Horse and His Boy, and I don't even remember why.

JF my dear you're such an open minded person. I quite like what you said - it does take me back to other lands, and also makes me feel little again. Theres always a sense of satisfaction when I read Tolkien and Lewis oddly enough. Even though Narnia is very simplistic, I think the reason I like it because you can take it in 100 different ways (even if you dont like it).

Oh, I certainly don't think he's intending to convert others. What I do think is that Lewis, holding the opinions he did, could hardly help letting them into his literature - and why would he want to keep them out? While I'll agree that the stories are excellent for pure enjoyment, I think it's self-evident that Aslan has similarities to Jesus. It's not good or bad, it's just fact. Tolkien didn't mean his literature as allegory either, but it has undercurrents that I don't think he could have kept out if he tried.

But I really don't want to incur the mods' wrath, and though I'm happy to talk about this with anyone over PM, this is actually the What Are You Reading thread So maybe we can debate the religious undercurrents or lack thereof in Narnia somewhere more appropriate.

Right, so with that, I'm *still* on Eye of the World, but I'm chewing through it *angelic look*

I was reading something about the Narnia books on wikipedia and it said (this has probably been mentioned) that Lewis himself said any allegories in his novels were suppositional. If you're not religious, you can just enjoy a good book. If you are, you can read deeper into the symbolism.

Persuasion by Jane Austen, while I wait for my htree library requests to be filled.

Except Susan. She just got to watch her entire family die in a train crash. Even if she likes boys and makeup over Aslan, I think it's too much. Seriously, what the hell? I don't even like her character and it annoys me.


*High fives* I've only read the series once, and will never read it again. I thought it was boring and predictable, and almost gave up multiple times. I love children's books if they're intelligent enough for me, but these weren't. Even if they're isn't any actual religious allegory in the books, the absolutely constant insistence that there is by most of the people who read them drives me up a wall.

I loved Tumnus. Absolutely adored him, but the fact that he features prominently in a total of one book sucks (This is, btw, the main reason that I will never love a Narnia film other than LWW. The absence of James McAvoy was all I could think about while watching Caspian). All of the other characters were far too one-dimensional.
