...or sober and happy. Serious isn't synonymous with unhappiness!

Right. Thanks for mentioning that, Nienor.

The Hobbit is NOT meant to be a children's book. It was considered one though but Tolkien didn't want it to be one.

It does come across as more of a children's book than LotR does, though.

Well, the Hobbit never gets so despairingly grave and serious as the Trilogy, so it is more of a children's book than LotR.
Tolkien talked a lot to C.S Lewis, who was writing children's books, so he might have been inspired by his style.

yeah that's right. You can't really say that the Hobbit is as serious and grave as LotR and I think it's more like a children's book than LotR. I guess it's one of the books that can be read by children as well as by adults.

That's an interesting idea, Eä--I know that Tolkien and Lewis were close friends, but it had never occurred to me that Lewis might have influenced the writing style of The Hobbit. I think I'm going to spend some time thinking about that.

My meditation is incomplete, but it does seem likely that Clive influenced John's writing style.

I knew that. After all they're my favourite English authors. But have you ever read their full names on a book? or somewhere else(except in bios)?

Nope. But still, calling JRR Tolkien "John" is better than calling him "J."

I don't think so. Aren't abbreviations much cooler?

Tolkien and Lewis must have read and revised each other's work, so they would be inspiring each other.
Umm.... darn... I had a point, but now it slipped...
