...or sober and happy. Serious isn't synonymous with unhappiness!

The Hobbit is NOT meant to be a children's book. It was considered one though but Tolkien didn't want it to be one.

It does come across as more of a children's book than LotR does, though.

Well, the Hobbit never gets so despairingly grave and serious as the Trilogy, so it is more of a children's book than LotR.
Tolkien talked a lot to C.S Lewis, who was writing children's books, so he might have been inspired by his style. :-)

yeah that's right. You can't really say that the Hobbit is as serious and grave as LotR and I think it's more like a children's book than LotR. I guess it's one of the books that can be read by children as well as by adults.

That's an interesting idea, Eä--I know that Tolkien and Lewis were close friends, but it had never occurred to me that Lewis might have influenced the writing style of The Hobbit. I think I'm going to spend some time thinking about that. :)

My meditation is incomplete, but it does seem likely that Clive influenced John's writing style. :)

I knew that. After all they're my favourite English authors. But have you ever read their full names on a book? or somewhere else(except in bios)?

Nope. But still, calling JRR Tolkien "John" is better than calling him "J."

I don't think so. Aren't abbreviations much cooler? :)

Tolkien and Lewis must have read and revised each other's work, so they would be inspiring each other.
Umm.... darn... I had a point, but now it slipped...
